Actually no. The mk1 is origianlly a euro spec CL that came with a 1.1 liter/4 speed. Currently has a 1.4 liter 16V (AFH code) out of a '99 VW Polo. It's makes about 150 HP with dual 45 Webers. The head flows better that the 1.8 or 2 liter heads, plus it's square. 76.5 mm bore/75.6 mm stroke so...
FYI the US model cars can be coded to receive euro radio stations. It is also possible to get the (main) speedometer to kmh if you have the digital dash. At least on my '19 R it worked with OBD11.
Short answer: No. I have a 2019 US R in Germany and have worked with the local dealer to try and get the Nav to work. The dealer can't even get a straight answer from VW if it's software, firmware or hardware that would need to be changed. The dealer tried all sorts of coding changes, and so did...
